Your missing out on some cool charts...
Aaron Henderson a.k.a. SpaceMaNy0
How old are you and what's your occupation?
I’m 31 years old and currently work full time at Park Shore Golf Club on the grounds crew and part time at Knollwood Country Club in the kitchen...OK, I wash dishes.
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
I played sparsely as a teenager and remember a few rounds as a kid, but I started playing a lot about 13 years ago when we moved out of the city and found a little 9-hole course called Birch Tree Golf Course (it's now closed). My brothers and I could walk a few times a week. My handicap hovers between 13-19 and currently 14 on oob.
How often do you play?
In season I play almost every day. Working at a course helps to be able to get nine holes in almost any time I want. Through the winter I have to take vacations to get out on the links.
Tell me about a great shot you've made.
Probably the best shot I’ve ever made didn’t count for anything. I got my irons from a buddy a few years back and when he brought me the set he forgot the PW. So the next week when we played again he brought the PW and we went out into the fairway to hit a few shots. He parks at the 100 stick and throws a couple balls down so I do too. Hit the first one bad, real bad, but the second one is OK. The third one flies straight as an arrow, hits the green and rolls right in. Funniest part was my friend called it in the air, “That’s going in the hole.”
What is your best golf memory?
Witnessing my brother's hole-in-one. Literally 3 days before, I was talking to a buddy about how it would be cool just to see one, even if it wasn’t me. The shot was awesome, hit short of the green and bounced left right at the hole. It crept closer and closer, and right as I said “Awwww” because I was sure it stopped, it disappeared. Awesome!
What is your "home" course?
That would have to be the one I work at, Park Shore Golf Club. Before I worked there I played it quite a bit. From the BYOB to them letting you play more after 18 for free to the small town family friendliness, it’s just a nice chill course. It’s short but still has some challenging holes, and some good birdie holes too.
What ball do you play?
It varies from what I find at work. Last time I bought balls I bought TaylorMade Burner Tour, but I play Titleist Pro V1’s or Callaway tour balls if I find those. If I had a preference I’d say I lean toward the TaylorMade.
Drivers: TaylorMade Burner 420
Drivers: Cobra F-Speed LD
Fairway Woods: Callaway S2H2
Irons: Cleveland 588P Square Grooves
Wedges: Tommy Armour 845 V-31S
Putters: MacGregor Challenger
Putters: Ping Anser 5
I don’t know that I have a favorite, I love to watch golf to see all the different shots and all the different approaches to those shots. For the sake of the question, I guess I root for Phil more than anyone else, just because he plays balls to the wall like I do. Even if he doesn’t win, he sure as hell goes for it. I root for the older school people mostly - K.J. Choi, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els.
Favorite course you've played?
Besides the one I work at and play all the time, I’ll say Chesapeake Run Golf. It’s tucked away and a beautiful layout, while still reasonably priced. I’ve never played a round that cost more than $50.
Dream course you've yet to play?
Everyone always says Augusta National, Pebble Beach, St. Andrews...I’d like to play all those, sure, but I’m more interested in playing the unsung little courses. My girlfriend and I use oob’s Course Finder quite a bit to pick a random place to enjoy the game anew. I would like to play Harbor Shores, after recently attending the Senior PGA Championship there. What a beautiful course! I’d butcher somewhere roughly in the 120s.
Best round ever- and what course?
I shot even par once - once! It was at Park Shore Golf Club and I shot the lights out. After a 4-over front nine with a birdie on one of the hardest holes on the course, I had 3 birdies and one bogey on the back, and made a shot from 50 yards out on 18 for my first eagle in over 2 years. Other than that, my best round is +9.
What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
My worst stat is Putts after GIR. I hate 3-putting, and I do it a lot when I hit GIR’s. I seem to miss a lot of 2-3 footers lately too. Besides that, I just try to keep the duffs down. I know I won’t get much better than bogey golf, but I can put it together every now and then.
Tell me a story.
I’m not much of a storyteller. Most of my rounds fly by and I hardly remember all the notes I want to keep on oob. The other day I remember I was playing with 2 friends before work and we heard a rustle in the woods and a couple seconds later a hawk flew out about 20 feet in front of us with a baby something in its claws. It flew across the fairway and landed in a tree and started eating. We tried to get a picture but our phones were all too old and crappy.
Thanks for having me!
