Your missing out on some cool charts...
J Kyle Olson a.k.a. jkyleolson
How old are you and what's your occupation?
I'm 23-years-old and I'm a senior at Georgia Tech studying electrical engineering.
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
I, like a lot of kids, took a few golf lessons as a kid but never really got into it. In March, three of my friends invited me to go play the Hooch one weekend. Needless to say, I played awful but had a blast! About a week or two later, they invited me to go play again at SouthWind. That was when I really got hooked and I've been playing and taking lessons ever since. My handicap is currently 20.9 and slowly dropping.
How often do you play?
I try to play at least twice a week but it all depends on my workload.
Tell me about a great shot you've made.
The best shot I ever made was at Painted Dunes. From about 80 yards out, I had a beautiful shot that landed a few feet from the hole and then rolled in. Unfortunately, the hole didn't start off that well. I had teed off and had completely mishit the ball into the desert to the right of the fairway. I ended up chipping it back into the fairway and taking a follow up shot to layup the ball for my 80-yard shot. It was the most exciting par I've ever had.
What is your best golf memory?
I interned this past summer in El Paso, TX for a second summer. Having recently taken up golf, I found a golf course about three miles from work and spent all of my free time there. I met a great group of golfers and played with them up to five or six times a week. It definitely cured the loneliness I experienced the summer before not knowing anyone in the area. My favorite memory was taking a road trip with that group up to play Desert Lakes.
What is your "home" course?
I'm currently looking for a new home so I haven't found a home golf course yet. Since I have to pick, I'd say Painted Dunes. It was about three miles from where I interned this past summer. They have great membership options, great instructors, and a beautiful desert course.
What ball do you play?
I love the Titleist DT Solo. They have great spin around the green without too much spin off the driver where I struggle the most.
Drivers: Callaway RAZR Fit
Fairway Woods: Callaway RAZR Fit
Hybrids: Callaway RAZR X HL
Irons: Callaway Big Bertha Fusion
Wedges: Titleist Vokey 200 Series Chrome
Putters: Ping Scottsdale Y-Worry
I'd have to say Phil Mickelson is my favorite pro. I love watching his short game. My short game is the best part of my game currently, so it's been fun watching a player with one of the best short games.
Favorite course you've played?
Red Hawk. It's a beautiful and challenging course out in the desert. Lots of great sights and a fun course to play. It's long, has nice wide fairways and a few tricky holes.
Dream course you've yet to play?
I was debating between TPC Sawgrass or Pebble Beach, but I think I’m going to have to go with Augusta National. Augusta National is such an iconic course that so few people get to play, I can’t think of a more prestigious dream course I’d like to play.
Best round ever- and what course?
My best round ever would have to be the 90 I shot at Browns Mill in October of this year. It has been my goal since I started golfing seriously to shoot a 90 and I finally did. Now, my new goal is to shoot an 80.
What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
That would definitely have to be my Long Game. I've been battling a hook and I think I'm finally starting to get it under control.
Tell me a story.
When I was a kid, I took lessons from Vince Cali at Winter Pines. He had a chair that read "Vince Cali, Golf Pro to the stars." My mom always gave me a hard time and anytime she would say Vince's name she’d follow it up with "Golf Pro to the stars and Kyle."
