John and Mark Calcavecchia- Just Chill'n
Your missing out on some cool charts...
John Daly a.k.a. jdaly
It must be a unique experience sharing a name with a famous person, especially when you don't share it until later in life. I'm sure our Golfer of The Week had nobody question his name- until one day- he's got the same name as a golfer. Well- today THE OTHER John Daly shares a name with our guy.
How old are you and what's your occupation?
43 - Sales Engineer for a software company.
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
Started playing about ~20 yrs ago. Although this past year has certainly been the most active. According to oob, I'm at 15.5
How often do you play?
I try and get out at least once a week on average.
Tell me about a great shot you've made.
Well, I'm still waiting for that truly "great" shot, but, just recently I chipped in from ~60ft for par playing a bump and run shot. No visual witness, however the guy I was playing did hear the ball slam into the pin, full-force. At that speed I'm sure glad it hit!
What is your best golf memory?
This is not necessarily a "golfing" memory, however I did have the pleasure of meeting Mark Calcavecchia and his family when they came over to our house in Phoenix last year to help close a real estate transaction. Although I never managed to get a round in with him, I was able to get a pic or two and some other golf wares. Real nice guy who's making quite a comeback this year.
What is your "home" course?
Range End in Dillsburg, PA. An easy drive from the office which allow us to get in 9 over lunch.
What ball do you play?
Currently using Maxfli. Why? I guess because Dick's had a sale.
Ping G2 irons, a really old Ping Anser putter, Cobra 460 driver.
To name a few: Phil, Tiger, Calc, Furyk, and of course - Daly!
Favorite course you've played?
Club West Golf Course in Phoenix was real nice, especially since is was 5 mins from the house. Awesome desert surroundings, tough to beat the view. Although, if you weren't on the fairway, good luck! Back here in PA, I do like Deer Valley, especially since I shot my best round there.
Dream course you've yet to play?
I'd like to try out any of the TPC courses. And maybe Pebble Beach, just for kicks. I did visit the course last year on a family trip. Made it as far as the pro shop. Good thing I wasn't playing that day. The fog was horrendous. This was in the middle of the afternoon! Too bad for those who paid ~$500 to golf that day.
Best round ever- and what course?
Deer Valley, shot a 79.
What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
I think I've finally managed to get my driver working, I just need to get the next shot working. ~150 yards out, in that range. Seems so easy to put it on the green from there - ugh...I sure wish it was. So I'm in need of a G.I.R. improvement.
Tell me a story.
It was a fine winter's day back in, oh, let's just say, the early 80's The air was cool, the sky was blue, and the skiing conditions were - just ripe. Having skied the morning, it was now time to climb into the car with my fellow skiing buddies and head to lunch. Was driving my beige '76 Dodge Dart (yes, I admit that) complete with a clear view of the road from underneath the pedals. Yes, a hole in the floorboard. So anyway, we get to the drive-thru at McDonalds, order, then wait in line till we can pull up to the window. However, at this point the car starts filling up with smoke (no, not that kind of smoke ;) I'm guessing it was some insulation or something like that in the floorboard - it catches on fire. I manage to pull over, leaving the drive-thru lane and park while everyone bails out of the car. McDonalds calls the fire department. They arrive and work to extinguish the smoldering material as we sat on the curb eating lunch. They gave the car a clean bill of health, despite a bigger hole in the floor ;) We pile back into the car and head up the mountain to ski the afternoon away.
I really need to start asking that question with "golf story" in it!
