Lucas and Wife After Big Proposal!
Your missing out on some cool charts...
Lucas Bonstrom a.k.a. bugolfer71
I hate guys like Lucas. He has a great job, a great golf game and even a great proposal story. Some people have it all... they make it hard for the rest of us.
How old are you and what's your occupation?
I am 23 years old and I am an auditor for Deloitte & Touche.
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
I started playing golf when I was about 5 years old, my dad is a big golfer and cut down one of his clubs for me to swing with. My handicap on oobgolf.com is a -0.6, but I've only been out a few times so far this summer because I'm studying for the CPA exam. That handicap is currently skewed by a few good rounds this summer, but I plan to play to level out around a 1 or 2.
How often do you play?
Considering I am newly married and studying for the CPA, not as much as I'd like. I get out every Sunday afternoon with my brother-in-law and am trying to work in an occasional twilight round after work during the week. Hoping to get out a lot during July/August.
Tell me about a great shot you've made.
I've never had a hole-in-one or that would automatically go here. I think I'll go with a great recovery shot. I was playing in a college tournament in MN and it was the first time my girlfriend (now wife) came to watch me play. I hit my drive into the trees on a hole and had about 135 yards into the hole. Instead of playing the high-percentage shot (chipping out) I decided to try to be a hero. There was literally about a 2-foot window through the trees and it was pretty high up. I'm not sure how I did it, but I hit the window just perfect and put it on the green pretty close to the pin.
What is your best golf memory?
I have two great memories. First, I proposed to my (now) wife on a golf course in on July 2, 2005. We were both big golfers and I wanted to do something creative (props to my brother-in-law for the idea). We were playing with my brother and sister-in-law and I had arranged for both sides' families to be at the course. Our family hid in a giant hedge on the 8th green and, when we got to the 8th tee, we called my sister and she ran out and put the ring (in its box) in the hole. When we got to the green, I had my girlfriend putt up to the hole and that's when she found the ring. I then got down on my knee and proposed in front of our family and friends. It was perfect.
My second memory relates to a time back in high school. I played for my high school team in MN in the early 2000's. My memory happened during our sectional qualifier for the state tournament during my junior year. Only 5 individual players make the state tourney from each section and I was in a playoff for the 5th and final spot. I was really nervous because there was a gallery of about 75 people walking with, including my dad. The second playoff hole had a downhill second shot into a green with a lake on the left side. I hit my 7-iron to about 10 feet and went on to claim the last available spot to qualify for the state tournament. The only person more excited about it than me was my dad. It was really fun how proud he was.
What is your "home" course?
Old Wayne Golf Club, West Chicago, IL.
What ball do you play?
Titleist Pro-V1x whenever the budget allows.
Definitely a Titleist guy (shameless advertising).
Woods: Titleist 983E driver, 19 degree Titleist utility club
Irons: Titleist 704-CB
Wedgest: 52 degree Titleist, and 57 and 60 degree Cleveland wedges
Putter: Scotty Cameron (circa 2000).
David Toms (hence the profile picture). He's really easy going and doesn't get too rattled on the golf course, plus he's got great, smooth swing. (Runner up: Tom Lehman, solid on and off the course, plus he's from my homestate).
Favorite course you've played?
The nicest course I have played was free to me, making it even better. I played a course called Windsong Farm in Independence, MN during college and it was incredible. It had only been around a couple years at the point but it was already amazing. The greens were perfect, the layout was really fun, plus they had their own labeled bottles of water, does it get any better?
Dream course you've yet to play?
Augusta National. Not sure how I'm going to make that happen but it's always been my dream to play it with my dad.
Best round ever- and what course?
The best round I have ever played was in a match play tournament in Detroit Lakes, MN, so I couldn't even tell you my final score. I shot 1 or 2 under on the front and closed out the match by the 14th hole. I remember being 3 under through 5, the highlight of my golf career as of yet.
What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
I need to hit more greens in regulation, so probably my iron-game. My putting is solid enough that I won't three-putt too often. I just need to take the pressure of my chipping game.

Hate is such an ugly word, I lean more toward the other deadly sin, "envy". Great proposal story.....
You get out every Sunday afternoon with your brother-in-law, what about me - DJ?
