The Back Nine - Movie Review

[Update- Now With Trailer]

The Back Nine is an independent film following the true story of a 40 year old man who decides he wants to be a pro golfer. Jon Fitzgerald has a great job, a lovely family, and has a nice house. What he doesn't have is his lifelong dream to do something so incredibly ambitious that most would (and do) call him crazy.

The documentary starts with Jon as a 15 handicap with a passion for golf and not enough time. Over the next year, Jon becomes a serious student of the game and focuses on dropping his handicap while playing on amateur tours and working with some of the best golf fitness instructors and help available.

I'm not going to spoil what happens next, but I can tell you I enjoyed watching the movie and was entertained throughout. The film has been featured at multiple independent film festivals and is now available for purchase on DVD. Right Angle Studious has been kind enough to allow oobgolf to give an 18% discount (one for each hole- get it?!) valid through Labor Day of this year.

Here's the real skinny. It's not a summer blockbuster, it's a documentary. It's 85 minutes or so of an interesting and fun endeavor, one that Jon is still currently pursuing (and is filming a follow-up). If you like golf you'll enjoy the movie. If you're on a first date and you haven't covered the topic of your golf addiction, you may want to hold off (or just go for it, because you'll know afterwards where the relationship is really going). You should know oobgolf isn't receiving any payment for the sales of the movie and everything I'm saying is my personal opinion. The film really is entertaining!

The movie is unrated and while it's 99.8% PG, there is one short scene with a couple "f-bombs". The parent in me has spoken - now go forth and buy the movie. The first 5000 copies sold will be signed by the filmmakers including its star, Jon Fitzgerald.

Ben Crane says:
I was hoping the other .2% non-PG rating was for saucy beverage cart girl footage.
Kickntrue says:
@ben crane- maybe in the follow up! I'm sure the team will be reading these comments - so feel free to leave suggestions!
TWUES17 says:
Make sure it's not the chick from the earlier cart girl article or you'll alienate all your non vision impaired viewers. Man, I hope I never meet that girl in a dark alley. Actually, that alley effing better be dark. Gooooo!

I'm on a roll today.

Read Paper Tiger by Tom Coyne, very similar story, hired the best teacher and took off form his job and life in his attempt to make it through Q School, one of my favorite books on golf, He is the author of several golf books including A Course Called Ireland.

Niramas says:
This movie blew. All this build up to play in Golf Channel AM tournaments. Big Deal. And most of the time is spent going over his relationship with his dad and stepdad. Yawn. This movie belongs on the Oxygen Channel at 3AM.
