New Features / International Handicapping
By Kickntrue on 8/25/10
Nothing necessarily "looks" different on oobgolf today, but some major changes took place last night and are now live on oobgolf. This will affect those outside of the USA and Mexico a bit more than others, but there is a little something for everyone. Here's a quick rundown:

  • You now have the ability to turn off handicapping ("My Settings -> Handicapping"). Maybe you keep an official handicap somewhere else and just want to use oobgolf for stat tracking. Maybe you keep an international handicap we do not offer. This could help.

  • You now have the ability to enter handicaps manually (Addict Only) This feature is toggled under "My Settings -> Handicapping" and is for those who carry an official handicap who want to tell us what their number is instead of us calculating it automatically. Because of some differences between oobgolf and Official USGA Handicaps it makes sense that someone would want to give us their official number for stat tracking. This also makes sense as we introduce new handicapping systems (like CONGU) where entering a starting index is a much more accurate way to track stats and scores since those handicaps can reflect years of golf played versus just your last 20 scores.

  • We've added RCGA Support. You're welcome Canada.

  • CONGU - Yah, that just happened! Here's the deal- you can access new controls by going to "My Settings -> Handicapping" but please do so at your own risk. When you change from one system to another you are completely changing the way your scores are view by our system. If you start flipping your account back and forth between handicapping systems the site will treat your scores different based on what you had implemented at the time.

UK'ers (British?), if you're going to be making the switch to CONGU as your main handicapping system, we'd suggest you go back and edit any 9 hole scores you may have. You should be able to just click "Edit -> Save" and it will work them out. We've also been capturing SSS ratings for a couple weeks- and you have the ability to add the correct SSS to previous scores if you'd like to edit those as well.

  • ESC adjustments are no longer part of net scores (outside of handicapping). We had a couple questions about this and after thinking it over, it made sense. ESC is a function of handicapping but if you're playing someone with strokes, or on total net it doesn't make sense for them to get to adjust strokes for ESC. ESC is still implemented fully for handicapping purposes.

  • ESC adjustments are no longer part of Fair Score. Same rationale as above.

  • Differential is now rounded to nearest 10th prior to averaging. This is now inline with the USGA Handicapping procedure. It is very unlikely this affects anybody's handicap since we're talking about a single factor in the handicap calculation being rounded to a tenth instead of hundredth. At most, you may realize your handicap index has changed by 1 tenth.

  • As always- comments and feedback are appreciated. This is a pretty major overhaul to our backend system so there could be some bugs. Feel free to let us know when you find those as well.

Thanks for the continued support and have a great weekend!

What am I missing. When I try to go to handicapping it sends me to the home page? Are you still working on this?

Yep I've got the same problem as ssllmom, could it just be for addicts? Might just have to become one then.

    @sepfeiff... whoops, sorry.
Just to keep it on topic then... urm, now with 2 kids under 2 I think my HANDICAP will probably remain the same as I won't have to get out there and play enough golf to affect it?

right... carry on, I don't think anyone noticed ;)

The support for Golfcard / oobgolf has got to be sorted out otherwise this whole iPhone app and site is useless to me. What a waste of money!!! It used to be all so good.

    klangdon says:
Paolo, this is decision done by GolfCard without interaction with oobgolf, we are VERY surprised. We will do whatever we can to help make this site useful for you going forward.

    Paolo says:
My mistake, I thought oobgolf & golfcard were one of the same. Golfcard have royally annoyed me and quite a lot of others I by the looks of it. I will keep using oobgolf as it seems to be a great site on it's own.

    Nojdemo2 says:
CONGU handicapping doesn't seem to work properly for me. Although my best ever round was a 38 on a par 33 nine-hole course, I usually shoot somewhere between 20 and 24 over. Somehow oobgolf reckons I play off 9.6!! What could be contributing to that discrepancy?

    Pflip says:
Any possibilty of EGA Hcp system ? I know there are formulas to move from Congu to EGA, but I'd rather have it in the system already.

BTW, this is another stupid move from Senygma, by "forcing" everybody to use UShandicap they left out all non-us (potential) customers.
    7/12/10

    klangdon says:
Nojdemo2, we just released a bug fix for the CONGU handicapping related to adjusted max hole scores. See if it makes sense now.

    goods73 says:
Canadian here... what is the difference between the RCGA and USGA calculation? My handicap just dropped quite dramatically by selecting RCGA - it feels like I cheated! (Can't wait for the new oobgolf iphone app - suck it Senygma!)
    7/13/10

    klangdon says:
The biggest difference between RCGA and USGA is the max score you can take on a hole (ESC). In your handicap category the max you can take in RCGA is a double bogey, while with USGA its a straight 7.

another european here.....EGA handicapping if possible please

    MartijnL says:
It would be nice to have EGA handicaps calculated but it's moot as we need to register qualifying cards to get an actual EGA hcp adjustment (which is a pain imho). You'll just end up with different handicaps anyway.

    Wboulet says:
I totally agree with all european players (obviously), EGA would be a great feature associated with a correct Stableford points calculation.

    Continue the great job !
