oobgolf Mobile App Available in iTunes
By Kickntrue on 7/30/10
The oobgolf mobile app has been approved and should be available through iTunes (very shortly*)! You can purchase it for $.99 for your iPod Touch, iPhone 3, 3Gs, and 4. The first iteration is a scoring app and works with all of the courses in our database as well as all of our stats (including Addict). oobgolf Addicts also have access to the Live Scoring features of the app.

The GPS version will integrate into this same app, so no need to wait. More details to follow once that is closer to launch. Just so the comments don't misread and we don't misrepresent- the GPS portion of the app will not be available for $.99.

Here are a couple tidbits from our App Store writeup. I'm too lazy to write it again in different words...
This is a scoring app from oobgolf.com, the best golf stat tracking site on the web. The oobgolf app allows you to score and track your golf round from the course, while your friends watch live on oobgolf.com. This app requires a free oobgolf account (name and email address) and also works with all of oobgolf’s Addict Stats ($12/yr). A free membership allows you to track scores, putts, fairway percentage and GIR. Oobgolf Addict allows you to us our live scoring feature as well as track over 50 statistic categories, purchased at oobgolf.com.

Find A Course - Search our database of 30,000+ courses for a nearby place to play or find scorecard and tee details of your favorite course across the world. With the oobgolf mobile app the world of golf is a search away. The app includes phone numbers to set up tee times as well as addresses to get instant directions from your phone.

Statistics - Please visit http://oobgolf.com/golfers/stats/available_stats.php for a list of stats you can track with the app as well as the link to upgrade to oobgolf Addict.

Anytime you want to review or just show off your game, you can view your statistics from previous rounds in the app. You can also view your previous scores and check out your charts to see a visual representation of all facets of your game.

Online Integration – oobgolf.com is the web’s best largest online stat tracking community. Using this app fully integrates with the site where you can view much more detailed analytics of your golf game. You can add friends, join groups and interact with our daily blog and forums. We also have the most advanced equipment tracking on the web as well as equipment and course reviews and local tournament listings.
As always- this is a work in progress and your feedback is greatly appreciated. Have at it- and let us know what you think!

To check it out - CLICK HERE!

* It appears that you can go to iTunes and get it and use this link in your iPhone and get it, but keywords aren't working yet, so it's not in the App Store search. If comments end up littered with "not yet" messages we may delete them once it's available everywhere. Thanks.

@Sam G. - you must download the course information using the internet before you play, but you can track your score with the app without a data connection.

Currently you can track 4 golfer scores, but only one of them syncs to an oob account. We will expand this later.

Great work! Good to see that we will in the future be able to add/sync our friends from oobgolf as players. I hope that you will improve the way we change player in the application. That is too much work at the moment. I also hope that we will get auto select on values so we do not need to erase the value before correcting/change it.

Great job, just downloaded it! I really like the layout and hope the rangefinder will be just as good. Unfortunately I'll still be using Golfcard (the old version) until the rangefinder part gets sorted as I rely on it when I find myself a little offline around the course.

Nice suggestion from bill, sidegame scores would be good. Other Suggestions:
-the ability to manually put in handicaps (for all us non-US guys)
-the ability to e-mail rounds/stats (I currently e-mail all my rounds to my pro/coach after I play)
-the ability to view previous rounds individual hole stats (no. of putts/chips etc...)
-please add a "chips" button
-I liked the way in Golfcard that when bringing up the data entry page for a hole it displayed the average stats for that hole (i.e. GIR 66%, Putts 1.8 etc...)
(I hope these help and it doesn't seem like I'm just being picky)

And I'll definitely be upgrading to addict status now that I can track those stats live throughout the round. Great job to everyone involved getting this out.
7/30/10

klangdon says:
@Dazinkster,
Oobgolf now supports congu, rcga, and usga handicapping. Addict members can also manually enter handicaps. This is all available under your oobgolf account settings online.

Chips are available for addicts as are all the stats tracked on oobgolf.

The app will automatically post links to your scores to twitter, facebook, and email friends in oobgolf. Sounds like you should set your coach up with an oob account to get your scores emailed to him.

I know there was talk that you had already been developing it before the golfcard fiasco, but I don't know for how long. Do you have a proposed timetable for the droid app? Will it be in tandem with the GPS functionality for iPhone, before or after?

Congrats on putting this together, and getting OOB in front of even more golfers. I think your membership is about to grow.

I know it's a bit of a cheeky question seeing as how you've worked so hard to get this out so quick but do you have any idea on how long for the gps feature? Are we talking weeks / months?

Sorry to ask but I find that part more useful than the scorecard.

I've got an iPod Touch, so I only have net access when I'm at home. I just installed it, but without a network connection, it won't even let me start it up (after having primed it by logging in to my oob account once). For me, an absolute MUST have feature is the ability to operate without a connection---I've got to be able to download courses ahead of time, start the app, start new rounds, etc, without an active connection, then sync up later. If this is already possible, it doesn't seem to be working for me.

Another feature that I've noticed to be missing is the ability to alter the round settings after starting. For example, I may configure the round expecting to play the blue tees, then decide to play whites instead and forget to update this until a few holes in. Similarly, swapping from 9 holes to 18 holes after the fact ought to be possible.

I have a question similar to mellon23. I have looked at the same program - it is exactly the same as oobgolf..... Testing further at SG-mobiles homepage I found the exact same information (even the same spellingmistake in one word) about a local golfcourse, that I personally put in to oobgolf's database. Then I corrected the spellingmistake in oobgolf - and instantly the same correction showed up in skygolf's information... I think we need an explanation....

zeg says:
@klangdon, it's good that you can do that at least, but for me that's really not sufficient except as a short-term stop-gap solution. I hope you're going to fix that to something more elegant, because I don't always plan my round out far enough ahead to think to download the course, choose the tees, etc, before I leave my network.

@klangdon Along the same lines as zeg, my usual course has 27 holes and they never tell me until I get there which sets of holes I'm playing before I go. Oobgolf has them listed as 3 separate courses, so downloading before I go could work out, or it could not, if they put me on a 9 I didn't download. I haven't had a chance to try the app yet, as I'm having trouble with my touch at the moment, but hope to check it out this weekend.

sjduffers says:
I found that some stats are slightly different in the app than they are on the web. For example the number of overall birdies and bogeys or double-bogeys+ was off by a few, whereas the number of pars was correct! The scoring averages on par 3, par 4 and par 5 (last 20 games) were also off by a few fractions (eg 4.04 vs 3.99).

Is there a way to not show live scores for an addict user? I was playing with the app at home and saw the live scoring show up in my browser. It does not seem that "Notify friends" affects this capability at all.

I think that the data entry is a bit cumbersome compared to GolfCard's, with having to hit "Select" so many times for a single hole...

Overall a good (first? hum, not really) effort. I was very surprised too to see what Melon23 and Lerfeldt uncovered. Can you explain, please. Thanks!

Now, with the new oobgold App I am unable to upload his score, only my own. Since there is no chance he is ever going to get/be able to work as smart phone. sjduffers says:
@Johnstaffer - While this is a reasonable explanation, I hope it is not the correct/complete one, or else we have no assurances that oobgolf will stay around (it would be at Skygolf's whim). Now, there could have been some cross-licensing agreement that allows oobgolf to continue to operate independently and even take the Skygolf's iPhone app and publish it for oobgolf. Either way, I think we need an official explanation, and a statement as to the future. Going trough the Golfcard fiasco once is enough...

WOW!! Looks like someone else is pulling a fast one here... Do the comparison yourself.. Just look at the iTunes images of SG Mobile Scoring by SkyGolf compared to the Oobgolf app, they are identical in every screen!! Come on Oobgolf its time to fess up... you didnt write anything, you just changed some images to create some more profit for SkyGolf... how long before we have to pay a subscription to download the courses your user base helped create? Time to come clean!!
8/1/10

klangdon says:
I developed all of oobgolf and did the development of the oobgolf and sg mobile app. We are not pulling any fast ones. We simply did not launch this app under oobgolf last year out of respect for our mobile partners at the time. But that respect wasn't returned and we decided to launch at this point. We do have a close relationship with SkyGolf, which we believe will bring nothing but good things to both customer bases. We talked about this relationship last year in the forums and have even provided tools to allow moving scores between the communities. We can say more about this in the future. Right now we are focused on taking your feedback and getting a new version off the app submitted to oobgolf.

zerch911 says:
Want more proof? Go to clubsg.skygolf.com/ try to create a "free" account using your oobgolf user name... 100% chance you cant do it... Why? Because it is already being used in Oobgolf. Look around on the SkyGolf (ClubSG beta) site, things sure start looking familiar.
So you think Golfcard left you hanging by leaving OobGolf? Looks like since they were creating a competitive product to SkyGolf, they were pushed out the door and left hanging by Oobgolf. You boys better hang on tight, looks like you are going for a ride. Hope you have adequate notice before oobgolf disappears.
8/1/10

klangdon says:
Oobgolf is not disappearing and golfcard did leave oobgolf without notice. We made it clear with golfcard that we wanted to continue our relationship with them, we were sad to see that fall apart.

Johnstaffer says:
Yup, looks like golfcard was pushed out...why would Skygolf want a $10 app to compete with their $400 device?? Then it is only a matter of time until ALL oobgolf people have to join and pay for Club SG as Skygolf phases out OOB...

Great app, Klangdom, works fine.

A couple of improvement ideas :

- Side game (I miss the stableford point calculation)
- EGA hcp systems :)
- Possibility of using/switching between imperial and metric units
- pictures !. Iphone and droid are capable of taking pics, so why not having the possibility to take some and upload it (hole scenarios, great shots, funny lies, paper scorecard, etc)
- The "select" club, etc is a little too much clicking, the sliding selection can be made automatic without the need of confirmation
- While I like the "turn sideways to see scorecard", maybe also a simple button to view it could be nice. Sometimes it take some "forcing" to the iphone to recognize its positioning.

Anyway, great job.

Thank you OOB golf. I am not "thrilled" with the new app but I certainly understand it is V.1 and that you did it for us. I hope the Android folks get theirs soon as they certainly are vocal here, lol. I am sick of the way Scorecard has shilled out reviews for themselves and against Oob. It is so obvious. I wonder if they went to some course and gave out free apps in return for five star reviews. In one day they went from two stars to four. I continue to "update" my review on Scorecard which keeps my review on the first or second page, all in the interest of public awareness. I feel sorry for anyone who buys their app and then discovers the awful website they are forced to "join." I really did like Scorecard and what an idiot I was to look forward to the version two "update." What a sham.

Thanks again and keep improving the app. I just bought Callaway's uPro GPS and own the Leupold laser so all I want is an easy to use stat tracker.

Thank you for getting an app out fast but, although I have purchased it I will have to wait until it has improved before I use it. Really love the ability to see your oobgolf website stats on the iPhone!

I run the scoring for a regular group that plays in the UK. We need:
1. Ability to add other oobgolf player profiles
2. Ability to put their club handicap into their profile
3. Stableford calculation against the club handicap
4. Ability to upload to multiple oobgolf accounts

Until this happens I cannot use the app so still using Golfcard and csv email to manage score entry.

But many thanks for first steps

Thanks for your quick response to GolfCard Pro arrogant attitude. Your oobgolf app is very easy to work with but I think we all win, mainly iTouch users, if you allow more then 4 courses to be kept in app Database in order to avoid an online download anytime we want to play a different course.
There is also an issue about some courses around Lisbon because even if they have the same commercial name, for instance Aroeira, there are two complete different courses named Aroeira I and Aroeira II, but it is impossible now to sort it out which one is I or II. The same applies to Ribagolfe. Can you change that?
Thanks and keep the good work

GeoffCD says:
I play with other oobgolf members (up to 4 every week)and we take it in turns to keep score on one phone as it is so easy with Golfcard. This is because all player scores are on the same page. With this app it looks like you have to change pages for other player scores which is too slow. However when rotating to landsacpe all the scores are there but you can't edit them. Please could you add this feature (with a setting option of keeping it in landsacpe). For now we will carry on with Golfcard and upload the scores manually later to Oobgolf. This is maybe because you are concentrating more on stats (hence one page per hole entry) but I would be suprised if we are the only users who just want to score and upload for the purpose of a handicap. Many thanks for having a go as I was (still am) gutted we can't use Golfcard with Oobgolf anymore.

+1 on considerations for Touch users (or, as in my case, people with iPhones but no data plan - a glorified iTouch if you will). Golf Card [spit] did allow downloading of several local courses while on the net, then setting up and scoring the round at the course. That was an ideal situation. I got my friend's old iPhone so I could use the internal GPS and that's about when Golf Card [spit] pulled the rug.

So when you do get the GPS app going, I'd request that any course maps (if you're going to have them) be cacheable on the phone (if there's a limit on how many can be cached at once, that's fine, but hopefully it's at least 3 or 4). If the app is just going to show range numbers, then those should be stored locally for any downloaded courses.

Alright, now I'm going to go buy the oobgolf app 'cause I know that you guys are going to turn it into a killer app. For what it's worth, I'd gladly pay $15 for an app that does round setup, scoring, and GPS ranges with no active data connection.

As the smartSCORECARD developer, I'm going to try to tread lightly here at the risk of sounding like sour grapes. By launching your app, you're leaving your other third-party developers that did "respect" you in the dust. I understand that that is your prerogative, but it isn't great form.

You are further handicapping your third-party developers by offering features that we cannot access through your APIs. Good luck with your site (and I do mean this) without the third-party developers who helped you out in the beginning. It looks like you've made a business decision to continue without us.

@chuck.han: You raise an interesting point. I hope that oobgolf will be sensitive to you and other "competing" developers. It seems to me that tastes in scorecard apps vary enough that there's plenty of room for alternatives, so I hope you won't immediately abandon oobgolf support. It seems to me that oobgolf is only being wise to offer their own app---after all, this experience has shown that you cannot rely on your partners to continue support or give you warning that they're going to change directions.

It seems to me the best solution would be for oobgolf to level the playing field and allow everyone access through the API, then let the best apps "win" market share. This way they can guarantee that there'll always be an app available without unduly hampering third-party devs. Obviously the name oobgolf will be a boost for them, but I don't know that there's any way around that.

I would be a little disappointed if OOB did not continue opening their API to other golf apps to allow more apps to provide better or at least different options to users. There seems to be a wide variety of features and preferences across the community and a single app probably cannot satisfy them all.

Someone suggested a new forum for improvements/bugs on the new app; has thought been given to that consideration?

@klangdon... if what you say is true.... then how can I sign into ClubSG with my OobGolf username and password? No errors what so ever. I have never seen ClubSG until a few days ago and I dont have a reason to have a SkyGolf account. If I try to create an account with the same username, it says already taken... Dont know how else to interpret that.

I just downloaded the app today, and will put it to use this evening at my local league round. What a nice surprise to see "Bucknell GC" as the course in the sample pictures in the App Store. I went to Bucknell (Class of '02), but only picked up golf in the last year or so. I'm looking forward to the ten-year reunion and finally getting a chance to play the course there.

I have used smartSCORECARD and smartSCORECARD+ for some time now and they are awesome, I will purchase oob app and give it a try, but it will take a lot for me to move away from smartSCORECARD+ (although oob will still have my .99).
as @chuck.han says smartSCORECARD+ has the ability to sync up to 4 oobgolf (or non-oobgolf (although I only use the oob option)).

It is a great app and well worth the .99. I've only had it crash on me once on the course and I don't think it was the apps fault, I think the phone got overheated.

oobgolf - please don't alienate people like @chuck.han, a great app is there and some of us really don't want to switch. Give them access to the full API and let the market decide?

Adding courses to my favorites does not work very well for me. I end up with courses that I've never even heard of.

Like Golfcard, I would love to be able to see little indicators on my scorecard to tell me if I hit the fairway, GIR, putts, etc.

Just suggestions, love the app!

Are you saying that if I upgrade my Oob account to Addict I'll get a Chips button to enter for each hole I play?

Well done on getting the app out pretty quick. :)

thunderthor says:
@jpjeffrey - I upgraded to addict and got the chips stat on the app. Make sure it's a stat you track first though. First putt distance also became available on the app, not sure if any other categories show up on it.

I've been a dedicated user of theoriginal OOB Mobile scoring app. I purchased the OOB golf app for the iPhone and went out for a round on my usual course and everything was working great until I got to the third hole and realized the data for that hole was incorrect. I was standing at a par 3 and the app told me it was a par 5.

A little disappointed, I abandoned my scoring with the oob app for the rest of the round. Glad it only cost. $99. Can someone look into this.

SingleDigits says:
@dottomm: what course was it & I can make the change. That just needs to be updated in the OOB course database... nothing to do with the actual mobile app.

I used this app a few rounds. To summarize in one word: great !
Thanks for this app.
pro's: usable in Europe, easy to use, connection with Oobgolf, quick.
con's: stableford calculation, club of tee selection must be easier.

Used the app yesterday. It's great!
Only thing which needs work, user switching.. The combo box usage is too slow. A left or right swipe would be way better for this!

Thanks!

dottomm says:
@singleDigits: It was The Foxtail South Course in Rohnert Park, CA. You're right . The App operated wonderfully. No complaints there. Strange however was that, like I mentioned before I was using the Mobile.oob web tool previously and the data on my courses was always correct. Does this app use a different database?

Anyways. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick turnaround! Really good first iteration (beta really)

Because of how cool / easy score keeping is in an app, my friends all expect me to keep the group score thus for my use I would suggest the following.

- I have to be able to name the other players, I can't keep track of who player 1, 2 or 3 is. (if I'm missing where that is done it needs to be more clear.
- I also have an oob screen name that means nothing to my friends so I want to be able to use a different / my real name in the scorecard.
- agree with others who have said other player scoring needs to be less cumbersome.
- a list of friends (particularly the ability to choose them from my Address book would be great) since I play with the same 5 or 6 guys every time.

Other notes:
- I would like a preference to define what the default settings are (i.e. It's a pain to turn off Notify Friends every time - I'm NEVER going to do that)
- and improved stability is needed...

stato says:
@sjduffers - csv email into oobgolf - I don't use anything fancy to load, I just:
- send the email to myself in csv format from Golfcard,
- then I cut and paste the data into an excel spreadsheet,
- use data to columns to parse the data into cells (all seperated by commas)
- cut and paste the data in rows into oobgolf score entry

Because oobgolf has such a nice data entry interface you can just copy all the 18 holes gross scores as a single line, then putts, then sand and then penalties. Unfortunately the Fairway hit stuff has to be entered hole by hole.

It sounds long but actually only takes about 5 mins to enter 4 players with all their detail

SingleDigits says:
@dottomm: Weird. No change was needed. I compared the oob scorecard version of the Foxtail South course to this link: www.golfnortherncal.com/scorecards/foxtail.html and the holes were the same. For example #3 is a par 3.

Kevin did have to make a bunch of changes to the North course, which had too many white tees (and no yardages).

Can you try using the oob app again on the South course. Let us know if you're seeing the holes correctly.

And no, the mobile app uses the same database.

They are afraid oobgolf would charge for the use of their servers... so they switched to a service provider that already takes $15 a year to provide the same things we get for free now. Hmmm how is that good business? Also, they decided in may to switch but didn't tell their customers. I've got one word for that... but it's not nice to write that here ;-)

@klangdon- used the app for my last 2 rounds and it works great. The only thing I could not figure out was the live scoring feature. I'm an oob addict and did not see an option to upload the hole by hole score. I this done automatically?

The only features I would highly recommend are Stabbleford point tracking, course handicap calculation as well as default tee selection.
8/7/10

zeg says:
I understand Senygma's decision to change providers, after all, they do have to worry about their own business and oob being owned by direct competition is a legitimate concern.

HOWEVER

If they inked the US Handicap deal in May, why was I blindsided by the sudden change two months later (and only a week and a half after I bought the app) when the release came out, with no warning whatsoever? That is not a reasonable nor an honest business practice. If the oob support that they advertised were still available by not upgrading, that'd be one thing. Clawing it back because they're unhappy? That's fraudulent.

Honestly, this whole experience gives me a very sour taste for Apple's app model in general.

I just got my refund from Apple for Golfcard. It took about a week.

On another note has anyone had problems with the oobgolf app and adding favorite courses from the app. Whenever I add one near my house I also get one from Holland. It also won't find my location to chose courses close to me.

@Gleighton

How did you manage to get a refund out of iTunes? They're being really awkward with me. Saying my purchase of the app was a really old purchase. May 22nd 2010?? They've offered me credits on my iTunes account to purchase videos and song. I'm currently hitting my head against a brick wall with them. Who have you been dealing with? If you don't mind what is your username for iTunes/AppStore so that I can quote it as someone who has had a refund?

I am afraid that I am the only which had problems using the application for the first time on the course. I use and iTouch, so I create the game on saturday and went to course on sunday. Unfortunately it did not work and I started using the GolfCard Pro, which I didn´t want at all. I believe the app is not yet stable and it keeps blocking and asking me to login again and again.
You must upgrade the app before people like me get upset and move to where we did not have any intention to go, but stay with oobgolf.

jarroda says:
Hi guys. I'm demo'ing the application and fingers crossed this is the first version with lots of changes to follow.

On top of the many issues to address that I've read above I have another that perhaps someone can explain to me.

When I first downloaded the app and logged in it downloaded the rounds I had already stored in OOBGOLF. I then entered a round on the application and it appeared online.

However when I entered another round directly into OOBGOLF.com this afternoon that round does not appear on the iPhone app. Is this supposed to happen ?

One last unrelated item. It would seem great to create a "bag" online and then only the clubs in that application be available to choose from when it comes to entering scores. However the bag we can create just seems to be for "show" and when I enter scores I'm back to the same options that don't even cover more than one hybrid.

iNorv9 says:
@aclopes, i'm having the same problem. ideally the oobgolf app would work just as well on an ipod touch without a 3g internet connection. it's silly to have to create a round in advance imho. even when i created a round in advance, once i tried to re-access the round, the app said that i needed to enter my username and password again. how am i supposed to do this w/o internet at the first hole?!?!?! so basically i went back to scoring with pencil and paper.
i want to support OOB so i'll be patient, just please get on this update!

Please work hard to improve the oob app. Get the star up to snuff as they were in golf crap... even if you have to charge more. Maybe two separate apps, one for stats and one for gps. I just can't see using a 99 cent app for gps, not enough to make it worthwhile for a developer. I really am willing to pay more for the app for stats. For now, it is in need of quite a bit of work, sorry. (But I do appreciate you are working on it, maybe give us some hints as to when a new version is coming and what it will include. There are several folks here willing to help for free, use them!

When will the GPS application be available ??? - I will suggest to work a bit on the user interface 1) Bigger font, 2) Default score number (adjusted with - or + fields etc), 3) Please use more colors some times difficult to see when sunny. And 4) The options between Yards and meters.

esinek says:
All in all, I am very happy with the iPhone app (especially since it's 99 cents...)
Here's my list of immediate requests/bugs:
(1) Course Favorites: when I add some courses, others are added as favorites automatically (some from half-way across the country). When I try to un-favorite those automatically added courses, a "real" favorite course is un-favorited also. I haven't spent the time to nail down the steps to repro and specific courses, but can do so if needed.
(2) GPS Range Finder (as if you haven't heard this request before...)
That's it! I really don't need anything else at the moment. With those two, I will be a happier golfer. Thanks!
