Cobb's Creek Golf Club is the site of the first public golf course in the Greater Philadelphia area and today houses two 18-hole courses, The Olde Course and The Karakung Course.
The Olde Course is the crown jewel amongst the Philadelphia Public Golf Courses as it has been Nationally Ranked the #6 Best Municipal Course in The United States by Golfweek Magazine. Designed by renowned course architect, Hugh Wilson (architect of the famed Merion-East course in nearby Ardmore, PA) it is a mature tree-lined golf course that was established in 1916.
Accuracy is a must on the front nine as the layout takes full advantage of the namesake creek, which meanders through the course and comes into play on the first six holes (seven in total).
The back nine is equally as challenging and is highlighted by a string of lengthy holes including the monstrous 638-yard 14th Hole. The Olde Course boasts a long list of awards and accolades and has a tremendous history as it has hosted two (2) PGA Tour Events and has played host to countless tournament events.
The course is commonly mentioned in both International and national Travel Publications and is noted as a Must Play Golf Course by both locals and travelers alike. The Olde Course is a living, breathing piece of golf history and is noted as a Philadelphia Landmark.
Built in the late 1920's, The Karakung Course was designed to recreate the character and charm of it's sister course, The Olde Course, yet meet the challenge of the everyday golfer. Although length may not be a factor, accuracy and proper club selection is paramount as most of the greens are small, and the elevation changes are ever present. Rumor has it that in the 1930's and 40's those golfers that were deemed as "not good enough to play The Olde Course" by the starter were sent to play Karakung. Overall, The Karakung Course is a fun and enjoyable golf layout and is a popular favorite as the unique variations in the terrain beckons golfers to develop a well-balanced golf game.
