The Lawrence Park Golf Club, located in Erie, Pennsylvania, opened in 1921 as a 9-hole golf course. The course was constructed on land owned by the General Electric Company, built by employees of the company for employees of the company.
The original 9-hole layout was adjusted in 1931 to relocate Hole Nos. 1,2 and 9 to make up the back nine that you see there today. The original 9-hole layout was adjusted in 1931 to relocate Hole Nos. 1,2 and 9 to make up the back nine that you see there today. In 1941 the Club hired Alfred H, Tull to layout nine new holes and bring the golf course up to a full 18-hole facility.
Ault, Clark & Associates, Ltd. was brought on board in the summer of 1998 to provide the Club with a Master Plan of the course and bring them into the next Millennium. The plan included reviewing all aspects of the golf course, and making recommendations on how best to improve what was already there.
We worked with Frontier Construction to implement the improvements in two phases. The first phase began in the fall of 1999 and the second phase started in the spring of 2000. The work included, a brand new Practice Facility, remodeling of all existing tee complexes, renovating all existing sand bunkers and adding several new bunkers, rebuilding two existing greens, constructing a new irrigation pond, and installing a new irrigation system.
In short, the golf course has a fresh new look that is much more dynamic with improved playability and more appeal on each and every hole. The improvements have also gone a long way towards allowing Jerry Rice the Superintendent, to more easily maintain the golf course itself.
