The course was built in 1973 and then redesigned by designer Gary Roger Baird in 1988. Hole #2, a 446 yards long par 5 is the signature hole. This beautiful hole has fairways lined with hardwood trees and four bunkers protect the green. The entire course is heavily wooded and features an abundance of wildlife such as deer, geese and wild turkey. Each spring Montgomery Bell is host to The Dogwood Classic.

Beautiful course that winds through the park. Course definitely favors players who fade the ball off tee, only a couple of tee shots require a draw, but most holes have a big advantage to faders. One of the better values in the area, biggest complaint is the greens. The greens are almost always running very fast, combine that with the slope and levels in the greens, it borders on ridiculous. Greens either need to be slowed down or leveled out. If you aren't dead below the whole, the putts can get away from you in a heartbeat. Pin locations also don't help, it's not uncommon to miss an uphill putt, and it finish by coming back down from it's initial resting point. If something changed here it would be a fun and fair course.

Beautiful course that has lots of mature trees. The course isn't particularly narrow, but it is spread out through the state park. Any tee shot that is particularly errant will be a lost ball. The fairways are nice & plush bermuda, in really good condition.

The only drawback is the greens. They changed from bent to bermuda a couple or three years ago & they are still not "in". Three or four holes have sandy spots on the green, particularly #18. Not the way you want to finish your round, with a sandy, patchy green. If they fix the greens, I would give it 4 stars all the way.
