Beacon is a very friendly course that is lit so it can be played even in the dark hours. The driving range at the course is in great shape. It has some very nice targets and the chipping/pitching green is nice as well. The practice bunker is mostly useless.

The course has some patches that are literally rock solid and hence produce some very odd bounces and are horrible to play out of. These areas usually sit in the rough 1st cut and are much more common in the rough 2nd cut. The bunkers are frequently quite solid, playing more like clay. You can frequently play out of them with a pitching wedge or 9 iron as a result.

The greens are always in great shape however many players do not repair divots so it can make for unpredictable putting experiences.

The course makes great use of trees and water hazards to produce frequent challenges. There is also a premium placed on course management as the risk/reward ratio on trying to play over the water or trees versus laying up is present on almost every hole.

The fairways are very wide for the most part and the course rewards players for long driving and is much less punishing on inaccurate drives.

All in all, for playing on the south side of Houston, Beacon Lakes is hard to beat. And if you're playing near twilight or after dark there is no other option in this part of town.

So take it for what it is, the best in the area after 4:30pm and a generally average public links course.
