47001 Fairway Dr
Sterling, VA 20165-6480, United States

Algonkian is an 18-hole course that opened in 1962 and is owned and operated by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. This is a somewhat smallish site for a course, so architect Ed Ault resorted to parallel fairways throughout much of the course. No practice range is here, although separate putting and chipping greens are available.

The standard walking rates are $33 Mondays through Thursdays, and $46 on Fridays, weekends and holidays (carts are $16). Shoulder-season, 9-hole, senior, and twilight rates are available, as are season passes.

Best kept secret in Northern Virginia.

Great staff, great maintenance, challenging but not impossible course, effective marshalling, great pace of play, greens are in perfect condition.

The marshalls are always watching so repair your ball marks (as you should even if they are not watching)and keep up with the group in front of you.

This is a classic RTJ-era design, meaning a lot of back-and-forth, long, parallel par 4's without much imagination. I've always avoided this course for that and due to chronically poor conditions. But!! When I played a couple Saturdays ago, it was in good shape, the pace was fantastic, and it's a great course to walk (flat, with close holes). Not bad. Compare with Goose Creek; probably a step up from that.

Boring. While it's not bad for a muni course, the mediocre conditions, and especially lack of interesting holes, do not warrant the $60 price tag (including cart) on the weekend.

Again, I will mention the course is boring. Making it fairly long for a public course (~7,000 from the Blue tees) does not make up for that fact that the holes that have almost no variation and require the golfer to make almost ZERO choices or course management.

Brambleton is a far better choice in my opinion.

I'm a huge proponent of Algonkian so it pains me to report that she has fallen to the bottom of my playing list. It's now $29 to walk 9 and the fairways still haven't grown in (it's almost June now) - the Gonk has gotten way to expensive for such miserable playing conditions.
