Sault Ste. Marie Golf Club opened in 1919 with nine holes designed by George Cummings, known in some circles as the Dean of Canadian professional golf. In 1952, the notable architect Stanley Thompson redesigned Cummings's original nine and designed the second nine, which are noteworthy because this was Thompson's final course design; he died in 1953. More recently the club has engaged Les Furber, a well known and accomplished architect from western Canada.
The club has hosted many tournaments over the years, most notably the 1999 Ontario Heritage Classic (Aaron Olberholser) and the 2003 Northern Ontario Open (Mario Tiziani).
Public play is permitted with advance booking; the standard walking rate is C$50 (carts are C$17.50).
