A very unique course. Unforgiving. Stay in the short grass, thats for sure. All facilities were clean, current, and in great shape. Also enjoyed the wildlife that we encountered. Can't wait to go back.

Great potential. Vg mix of holes.
Place is hidden even if your looking for it.
Can be tough. Pick the right tees.
Was fortunate to have a great driving day that made approaches easy.
Watch ball closely, it will disappear in the rough.
Was worth the trip.

This course is probably the truest version of a links course in South Louisiana. It starts by winding through a cypress swamp, but progressively opens as you go along. Generally generous off the tee, it offers players many routes to the green. The greens and surrounds offer the true test of Atchafalaya. Several greens are flanked by water and challenging bunkers. They are very large with fast sloping surfaces. Reading them can cause even the best putters to go into overload. Subtle breaks are hard to read in many cases. If this coures has a weakness in design, it's the par-5's. The first one being the 3rd hole, which doglegs almost in a horseshoe shape. The double dogleg 6th hole maybe one of the most rediculos holes in golf... It requires a fade off the tee with a long iron or fairway wood. The second shot must be drawn around trees and sinister pot bunkers. Even a perfectly played second will leave a 3rd shot of 150 to 200 yards. The 13th offers a terrific risk reward opportunity, but the fairway is littered with grass bunkers exacltly where a well placed drive would land, so luck trumps skill even on the best par 5 on the course. The 16th hole has potential to be a really good hole, but the route that offers the long hitters an opportunity to go for the green is cutoff by internal out of bounds. Then the designer eliminated the possiblity of playing a run up shot (the greatest quality of a links course) by totally surrounding the front of the green with a huge bunker. The hole is further weakened by the course staff who insists on cutting the pin just over the bunker everyday, though it is a very large green. With some minor changes to these holes, Atchafalaya could take it's rightful place among the best courses in the state.
