Ballyliffin Golf Course, visited 26/11/2012:
I traveled from Dublin to the Inishowen Peninsula with a group to play golf at Greencastle and Ballyliffin. What a trip – we all enjoyed our golf at Greencastle, which turned out much better than expected. But Ballyliffin ..... well, what can I say – it was a class apart, just magnificent.
We played the Glashedy Links, as opposed to the Old Links. Weather could have been better (we had about 2 hours of misty rain), but none of this spoiled our enjoyment of the course or the scenery. This “new” Glashedy Links (I believe it opened in 1995) is just about the best links course I have ever experienced and I have played quite a few on the west and east coasts.
The course works its way through rolling dunes, where accuracy and straight shots are rewarded (fairways are quite tight) and wayward shots end up costing you dearly. There are also numerous pot bunkers that are very difficult to get out of, even if you are an accomplished bunker player.
All that being said, I really enjoyed the round and the clubhouse facilities afterwards. Would love to try this magnificent test of golf again to see if I can better my first reasonable score. Our group have now included Donegal, especially Ballyliffin, in our quarterly away trips to Ireland’s links golf courses.
Can’t wait to get back again next year for the golf – also the truly awesome Donegal hospitality and scenery.
