Though short, Coombe Wood can be a tricky test for the handicap golfer. The course is tight, and lack of accuracy can be penalised severely. Greens are generally deep but not wide with side bunkering providing protection if not approaching from the centre of the fairway. There is only one par 5, the first hole, which is reachable if the drive is well-placed. The key to making a good score is the seven par 3s: a par on any of holes 3, 5, 8 and 12 is very welcome, and the shorter ones (10, 14 and 17) play harder than they look. The longer par 4s (6, 11, 13 and 18) need accurate drives to open up the greens, and there are plenty of trees lying in wait around the course for off-line shots. Greens are generally medium paced and in good condition, though can be quite hard in summer requiring a well struck shot to hold (or take the chance of landing short and running up).
The club is extremely friendly and welcoming of both new members and visitors. My only criticism is the lack of practice space, but land costs a lot in this neck of the woods!
