This was the only non-links "parkland style" course that I played in Ireland. It played very much like a US course, in that you didn't have to let your ball land short of the green and run on. Also, sprinkler heads were marked to the center of the green instead of the front edge. It was also the only course I played while in Ireland (Ballybunion, Royal Portrush, Royal County Down, Ardglass, Portmarnock) that wasn't located on the coast, so there was almost no wind. I forgot how big of an advantage that is.
The course was in great condition, it was nice. There were several memorable holes. I wouldn't go as far as saying "The Augusta of Europe" as the course likes to advertise. If that really is what Augusta is truly like, my desire to play Augusta just really went down. The course felt forced and contrived at times, like a wannabe super nice American golf course. It felt like it was trying to hard with some of the trees that were planted that obviously didn't fit in with the surrounding scenery. The way the trees were spaced in perfect distance intervals away from each other made it feel unnatural. The largest swans I'd ever seen patrolling a few of the greens was a bit over the top (not to mention there is evidence of them "having done their business" on the par 3 17th.
Clubhouse was uber-pimp, I'd highly recommend having lunch there. The leek soup is outstanding. The staff in the pro shop was not especially friendly or helpful.
Overall it was a good golf course and would be great to occassionally play in the States, but if you're playing in Ireland I would recommend staying with the links courses. I've heard Druids Heath (the other course is a links course and is much better).
