Belmullet, 20, Ireland
This picturesque-but-rugged is located near Emlybeg North, so it overlooks Blacksod Bay and the North Atlantic Ocean. It also stands as the last-ever design by the late architect Eddie Hackett; the first nine opened in 1992, while the second nine debuted in 1993.
In August of 2013, a third nine ("Kilmore") opened with a design by Scottish architect Ally McIntosh and American architect Jim Engh, himself a member at Carne. (Our scorecard for the Kilmore course is already mapped for 18 holes.)
Belmullet Golf Club (founded in 1925) is resident at this course. Visitors are welcome; the peak-season (April-September) walking rates are €70/round or €90/day, while the winter rates are €35/day.
Hole measurements are in meters.

Carne Golf Links - visited October 2012:
This was my first visit back to Carne Links since I had a knee operation over 2 years ago. And, believe you me, you need to be good on the old pegs if you want to tackle Carne without using a golf buggy.
The course is just as good as I last played it, with beautiful views of the Atlantic – next stop west is the USA. But this links track is very tricky and you need to be hitting the fairway, or just off it, to ensure a score on every hole. I found the long grass in the rough just a few times and it was virtually impossible to get out of it. And do keep out of the pot bunkers. They are not for the faint hearted!
Leaving all of that aside, everyone in our group enjoyed their golf. Clubhouse facilities were grand and food at the bar was excellent – they do a great chowder, which I had 2 days in a row.
We returned to the clubhouse on our last evening for our meal, presentation of prizes, music, dancing and the craic. Food was excellent and a great night was had by all.
Well done, Carne. Looking forward to a return visit in the new year.
