This course caused a sensation when the first 18 holes ("Port Course") opened in 1995; it was built basically over a waste site that badly needed redevelopment. Dick Nugent designed all 36 holes here (the other 18 is called the "Starboard Course"), rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest. Similarly, when Ben Crenshaw played here in 2002, he compared Harborside to Muirfield in Scotland. Golfweek Magazine tagged Harborside as the third best municipal course in the nation.
The site is just 16 minutes from the Loop, just off the Bishop Ford Expressway (Interstate 94) at the 111th Street exit (66A). The rates are $82 weekdays and $95 weekends, although a $57 twilight rate is available after 3:30 p.m.

Nice course once you get there. Coming from outside the city, it is pain to get to from almost any direction. If you live in the city or nearby, it's probably the best public course within easy driving distance.
Maintenance is very good, but only 4 stars as the bunkers were packed, not very fluffed. A lot of mid season wear on some fairways. The rest of the course is in very good shape. The greens were some of the best I played, putts rolled true and fast.
Rangers passed every couple holes to ensure pace of play.
The scenery of Lake Calumet is nice, and the occasional view of the city skyline, other than that you are looking out at industrial surroundings.
Nice practice facility.
Bev cart service was pretty good.
2 restroom facilities across 18 holes, however there are placed were you pass by them 2 or 3 times per 9 holes. Water is only available at the locations.
Nice club house to add up the scores after the round.

Can't say anything bad about this track. Course is fantastic, grounds are great, weather is tough but that's golf.

Not the most affordable course around, but when you consider what you get the $95 and the proximity to the city it is not bad at all. Twilight rates are a very good deal, so if you want to play here but cannot stomach the $100 green fee, twilight is a good option.

Worth playing...the heather is thick, so keeping your ball in play is critical. Nice view of Chicago skyline....also if the wind is blowing, watch out!

I work in downtown Chicago and entertain clients at Harborside often. The courses are always in great condition. In the spring they play extremely difficult as the heather mounds are so lush, if you hit into them, consider it a water hazard, your ball is lost. As the they dry out, they're penalizing but not impossible to find your ball and hack out. The practice facilities are top notch.

Played Port Course on 7/26/08, and again, the course was in excellent condition. Fairways and greens were very well kept. Greens were super fast, though, so hard to control approach shots sometimes. Sand is a little clumpy, though. Liquor carts everywhere, so hospitality was great. Pace was a little slow, but not too bad. It is a little pricey at $95 Weekend Rate, but convenient to downtown Chicago, and the price includes a bucket of range balls. Easily one of the better course in the area, for sure.
