Formerly known as Doubletree Golf Resort, Carmel Highland features an 18-hole course that opened in 1966 with a design by Jack Daray. In 1987, Jack Daray, Jr. and Stephen Halsey added three new holes and redesign the others. In addition to various elevation changes, 80 bunkers are in play. Locals say the course is as challenging as it is picturesque.

Decent course in San Diego, rates are low, greens are in decent shape, holes are challenging enough for all abilities. Only drawbacks: only one restroom on the whole course, kind of ridiculous; practice area doesn't open until 7 a.m., so if you play early, make sure to warm up at home; no full-legth driving range; these guys are so cheap, they don't even have complimentary 2-3 tees in the cart, you have to buy extra tees if you run out. Oh, and God forbid if you go to the chipping area without being a "member", one of the young punks will give you crap about it in the most unfriendly manner.

Played 8/16, teed off @ 0630. The $45 w/cart internet deal was the best this course had to offer. The majority of the tee boxes weren't level, there were brown spots and bare ground throughout the fairways and rough, standing water on the tee boxes and fairways. The sand was hard packed, though it looked like it had been raked recently. The greens were above average for San Diego, though inconsistent from hole to hole, with no way to gauge speed on each. The pin placement on some was horrible, with the group having combined mid-teen putts on several holes. The cart guy didn't have anything but beer, no food, snacks or non-alcoholic beverages, except diet something or other. The clubhouse was nice until we sat down and realized the table hadn't been wiped off since the last group and it took us two more tables to find a clean one. The driving range doesn't open until 0730 so anyone with an early tee time gets no warm-up. All in all, this was not a very enjoyable round due to poor course conditions and unenthused staff (except for the starter, he always has a smile and a kind word for everyone).
