With the exception of my driver, I simply can't hit off mats anymore. The expectation with a perfect iron shot is that a divot will be taken. I can usually tell a lot about my shot by what my divot looks like. When hitting off a mat, the club bounces, and you can't tell whether you hit it fat or not.

Since we're on the topic, the distance I get with my irons currently is the reason why I can't hit my A4's anymore. About two months ago, I really learned how to hit down on the ball and take a divot. The result is a nice easy swing with 150 yards of distcance on my 9i. I started playing the A4's because I had a tendency to hit the ball thin, and I still get a decent shot with the A4's when I hit it thin. However, now that I'm hitting more down on the ball, I have developed a tendency to hit the ball fat when I miss. Well, if I have a club that takes a nice divot, hitting the ball fat will still result in a decent shot.

The difference between the Tight Lies and the A4's is simply the ability to take a divot. My distance (per trajectory) is about the same.

I'm still learning ... don't know enough about this stuff yet. I'm lucky to get 150 yards out of my five iron.

Well, I'm still learning too:) Seems funny that my scores aren't getting any better, but I'm getting better with each of my clubs:)

However, one thing I have learned is that these Tight Lies irons should last quite a few years.

Glad to hear you're confident in them. From my minimal experience playing with them, I'm pretty happy with the amount spent versus what I expect to get out of them. Smile

I think you'll be fine with them. I kind of feel bad for not giving them a better review off the top.

Now I just need to find a replacement 9i.

After shooting a 7 over 40 with tough tee and pin placements yesterday (a good score for me from the whites on a par 33 course...my best ever is a 3Cool, I'm convinced that it's time to go back to the Tight Lies set. I even went so far as to order a new 9i.

My iron play yesterday was the best it has ever been. Too bad I shot so horribly with my lob wedge.

Just got back from playing. We weren't able to finish 18 before dark (got a good twilight rate though). It was an unfamiliar course with probably the most awful green conditions I've ever seen on a full 18 hole course. Iron play was reasonably good, but probably not markedly better than last time I played with my Wilsons. I suspect it will get better. My issue right now is my driver, which I suddenly can't hit and it's really, really ticking me off.

Well, I suspect it will get better. A new set of clubs takes some getting used to, especially if this is the first time you've switched clubs.

I played my second round with the Adams Tight Lies yesterday, and REALLY saw a difference this time. The distance I got from my irons yesterday versus previous experience with my Wilson Ultras was significant. For example, previously my pitching wedge distance limit was about 85 yards. Yesterday, I hit the Adams pitching wedge about 110 yards. I saw this same difference in distance when hitting my seven and eight irons. I only hit my six once (hit a tree limb) and didn't use my five, so I can't comment much on those two clubs. In the end, though, it appears my distances have shifted by one club.

As you can imagine, this caused some problems yesterday. I flew a few greens because I had the wrong club Smile

As a disclaimer, I will say that there's every possibility I was just hitting my irons better than usual yesterday. I'll know more when I play on Thursday.

My guess is that, since the Tight Lies are extremely forgiving, you were making solid contact unlike before.

I'm happy to hear they are working out for you, though. After trying out a semi-hollow back club for the first time today, I've come to realize how good of a set that Tight Lies set is.

I played a second round with the Tight Lies last week, and it's not just my imagination -- I definitely hit them longer than my Wilsons. I played a crapassed round (tough course that I'd never played before) but nailed a couple of shots that I was pretty proud of. From between 110 and 120 yards out I put the ball on the green about 7-8 feet from the cup ... using my pitching wedge. I'd never hit my Wilson pitching wedge much more than 86 yards! As I mentioned before, all of my other irons have suddenly become "longer" too.

The only club in the set that I'm not sure about is the four hybrid. I've been having trouble hitting it well, despite the fact that I've read reviews everywhere that it's a forgiving club. I've carried a 24-degree since I started playing, and the other one I have was something of a go-to club for me, so I don't know what's different about this one. I haven't really hit it all that much, though, so I might get used to it. After the results I've gotten from the irons in the set, I'm willing to keep trying.

What was the 24 degree go to club that you were previously using?

Cheapie ... Pro Steel 24-degree hybrid. Got it for a song at Golf Galaxy last summer. Certainly nothing special, that's for sure.

there is an old saying that goes something like "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

My regular playing partner has spent a good amount of money the last two years upgrading all of his clubs. He still has a five wood, though, that he bought for like $5 a few years back that he plays with to this day. It's certainly nothing special, but he knows how to hit it almost as far as his driver. It's his "go to" club when he's trying to hit par 5's in two. He'll even hit it out of the deep rough. It's his club.

If it works for you, why not use it?
