I need to lose some weight, so I joined a gym this week. When I signed up, they gave me 4 free training sessions. I had my first one last night and it was an evaluation session with the head trainer. We did the basics, and he asked me what my goals were. I told him I want to lose weight, and improve my flexibility which might help my golf swing. His eyes lit up and he said they had a new trainer who specializes in golfers. I met him last night and I am totally stoked to work with him. I have my first session with him next week, and I am really excited to get down to work. Stay tuned, I am going to keep you guys updated.

Good on ya! I'm running 3 days a week for 30 minutes and on the off days walking for 30 minutes. My flexibility is OK but my weight not good...just got to lose 40 more pounds.

week 1, no direction down 2 pounds. I meet with my trainer tonight, so I'm hoping that next week will be more productive.

I met with my trainer last night and he totally kicked my butt. That being said, I feel so confident that this is going to work. We did a ton of range of motion exercises and lots of core work. I don't think I've ever worked out my back and shoulders as well as I did last night. We parted with a plan for this week and a scheduled session next Monday night. I'll keep you guys posted.

well last night we did a lot of different exercises so that he could see what my current ability level was. But we focused mostly weight training target at the core. We did ab work and a lot of back exercises. We did some work with the yoga ball, which was new for me, and we also did some rotational exercises on those circular balance domes(i don't know what they're called). We also did leg work and arms last night which he said wouldn't be normal. We would either do core and arms or core and legs in a normal session. I'm pretty sore today, but I'm going to go tonight and do some light cardio to get the blood flowing.

weight loss update.
weighed in last night, and I have lost 11 pounds in 2 weeks. I'm really excited to see such great results. I worked out on Monday night with my trainer for the second time. We concentrated on legs and core. I've gone to the gym and worked out on 12 of the last 14 days, and obviously that along with my diet is paying off.
On the golf note, I played last saturday and was +3 through my first nine holes. However, I blew up 3 holes in my second 9 and ended up shooting 92. The best news for me was that I didn't feel fatigued at all during the round, which is new for me.

Way to go!! I'm trying to loose at least another 20 pounds. Keep up the good work. It helps with the golf.

When ever I've had a great first 9 I've always blown up on the back 9. I know its because of my lack of fitness and inablity to keep my mind focused on the game. which I belive is also do to a lack of fitness.
Any way, keep up the good work!

Joe Lim,
As to which core exercises I'm doing, I've been doing a lot of rotational core exercises. It's kind of hard to describe them, but essentially there is a machine that has adjustable arms. You set it to about shoulder level and then grab one of the handles with both hands and rotate around while keeping your arms straight. We also do crunches and leg lifts and "the plank". There is also a lot of weight lifting for the back (rowing and lat exercises). I think that going forward we are going to start working on a lot of yoga ball stuff, which engages your core during whatever exercise you do.
cswade,
The only complaint i have about the oobgolf app on my iphone is that it constantly shows you how you are doing relative to par. Screws with my head to see that I'm only +3 through 9 holes and on track to shoot my best ever. I don't think I fell apart on the back due to fitness level though. My putter went to crap and I couldn't recover from a couple of bad holes. It's coming around though. I really haven't gotten to practice golf lately due to the cold weather in Houston(I know it's relatively nice compared to much of the country). I'm hoping to be able to combine my fitness routine with a couple of range sessions a week when the days get longer and warmer.

weigh-in update:
I weighed-in yesterday and I'm down another 2 pounds. Total now is 19 pounds since January 29th. Pretty excited to see results.
On the golf side, I went to golfsmith last night and was hitting the R11 on the launch monitor. I noticed that my "average" swing speed was 101. Which is more along the lines of the fastest before I started working out. Even had 1 swing last night top out at 106. I'm playing this weekend, and I'm really excited to take the fitness gains I've made this month to the course.

Well done!!! i've been hovering around 8-10 lbs from when i started. I gotta push through that wall, but the weekends are killing me. I think once golf season starts and i can go out and walk the course instead of watch movies or shovel snow, then i'll be able to break through and get the weight down even more. Glad to hear the workouts are going well! I've been doing Tae Kwon Do for mental fitness and physical stability. I think it's worked because i can really swing hard and still stay in balance. Flexibility is good too. Might be something to look into - maybe a yoga class or the like once you get your weight down where you want it. Don't wanna get like tiger did -- all pumped up and no flexibility.

funny that you mentioned yoga. I have a friend at the gym that does "hot" yoga every week and has been after me to join him. So next week, I'm going to take an intro to yoga class. I really think it will help me with my balance and flexibility.
