16-17 handicap. I hit with too much backspin, and can see it in the ball flight: it starts off with a nice trajectory, then soars up like a kite and crashes down steep. My distances are playable with the shorter clubs (typical 6-iron carry 145, then zero roll), but it really costs me with the driver (rarely as much as 200, even after roll). These are with pretty good hits without much sidespin. It's rather embarrassing when my playing partners ooh and aah immediately after I make contact, and then the ball turns out to go only 180.

I've read different things about how high the ball should be teed up. Some writers say that you want the equator of the ball above the top line (with the driver), but when I do that, I get a lot of pop-ups. I try to have impact centered on the face, but I've read that that's too low. Naturally, I am also trying swing changes, but all of my practice time (and lessons) hasn't made much of a dent in this issue.

Can someone who overcame a similar problem give me ideas for what might work?

I am certainly no golf professional. I suspect a pro could diagnose and correct your problem rather quickly. However, if I were to hazard a guess, it would be that you are approaching the ball too steeply. With a teed ball and driver, one typically wants the approach to be level or slightly upward. A steep approach and high teed ball will often result in the "pop-ups" you experience. It is not the height of the teed ball but the fact that you may be hitting down on the ball, which also encourages back spin.

Agree, sounds like you are coming into the ball too steep. Try keeping your hips and head (therefore your center of gravity) behind the ball through impact. This will help bring the lowest part of your swing arc behind the ball and promote an ascending strike on the ball.

Drill to bring your arc back:
-Tee up your ball as normal
-Find a broken tee, or break one in half. Stick it in the ground 6 inches behind the teed up ball. Lets call this the reference tee. The reference tee should only stick up a half inch out of the ground.
-When hitting make sure that you are hitting the reference tee before your ball.

It is hard to say on a forum what the problem might be, try posting a video. The sure method is to go and see a teaching pro.
