Played in my first tournament just over a week ago. Disappointed with my score but enjoyed the experience!
I see the Greater Columbus (Ohio) Amateur Champ. is August 11 and 12 at Turnberry and Champions of Columbus, two courses I like quite a bit.
Has anyone played in this tournament before and can explain just a bit about it? Is anyone else planning to play in the tournament?

Nope, but I'm playing in the Taft City Amateur on the 25th and 26th... we can share our experiences.

Good luck and have fun Smile

Good Luck, guys!

I haven't entered it but the Columbia (SC) city championship here is a pretty big deal it seems. I'm not nearly good enough to enter, but have a few friends who play in it. I think you need to be a 4 index or better to even sign up, then need to make it through a qualifying round if I'm not mistaken.

Compared to all the tournaments I have been playing in which will take anybody, any skill level, just need to hand over that entry fee... tournament play is fun though.

we have a series of 6 local amateurs, with a player of the year points system, pretty cool i think.
Most of them are scratch with a 3-10 flight too, some of them are 3-18 so the one i am playing is 3-18 so i can finally make it in.

I play some mens club tounaments, but i thought a 2day tournament would be fun.
There is another one i think i can play in, 2 days 2 courses, looking forward to that too.

I'm working my way up to a GC Amateur Tour event.

I'm doing two different series here: one is the SCGA events the other is the GolfWeek am tour. The SCGA tourneys are cheap, but formal with official USGA handicaps. The "am tour" has it's own system and costs more but has more of a payout if you do well. I do the SCGA ones with a group of guys (you have to have a foursome) but do the Am Tour by myself where you are just matched up with guys in a flight. I don't do them all as some are overpriced I think. I pick the ones at the more special courses I would not get to play usually. I looked at the GC Am Tour, but it's even more expensive...

I got all excited when i saw SCGA but its South Carolina, not southern california Sad

SCGA has some events here, maybe I will do some more of those too. With a 9 month old and another on the way, i'm just happy to be playing...
World Am is my longer term goal... so we'll see.

Hey johnnydman - looked at your scores, pretty good tournament, except for a couple holes on the first round you would have been down in the 80's. For your first tournament not bad at all!

Thanks Jfurr, I was really excited to get going on day 2 but things didn't go as well(VERY slow play, hot, etc...excuses).
THe Tournament I just played in was at Mill Creek (Ohio) where Ben Curtis grew up, his brother won at -2. It was an Open championship, no HC, flighted after the first day. Was not expensive, only $15 more than the normal greens fees. They gave everyone a 2-ball Pro V1 sleeve, provided lemonaide/tea/snack at the turn. Very nice people there.

The Columbus Tournament looks to be day 1 at Turnberry, then day 2 at Champions. They ask for a HC so I guess it'll be flighted by HC to begin with. Looks to be about $25 over normal fees with a light dinner and maybe some other goodies. I'm just curious as to HC and whether this deal is out of my league?
I'll call them and ask questions tomorrow.

Looks like they are taking "all comers" as far as HC goes, so I think I'll give it a shot!

gpickin, looks like you and I have a similar game. Good luck with your tournament and let me know how you do.
