A tip for beginners(and many of the regular duffers I see on public courses): when you arrive at the first tee have the following items in your pocket:
1. TWO balls - don't crush one into the trees and then have the nerve to ask me for a ball,
2. TEES - same reasoning as No.1,
3. BALL MARKERS - are you kidding me? you actually
have No change in your pocket?
4. A DIVOT REPAIR TOOL - public courses take a major beating throughout the season and I'm tired of putting on greens that look like a relief map of D-day. Nuff said, for now...................

I have to disagree on this one, NO WAY....
why...
having a 2nd ball in your pockets gives your head
the IDEAL that's its OK to hit off into the woods cause
I have another one to hit in my pocket...
that is negative thinking right off the bat...
don't do it, thats like saying I think I'm going to
slice it so I'm going to hit this one left...

plus if you do hit one OB, you should walk away and get
another one then come back and hit... you don't need to
rush a bad shot and follow it up with another one right away...
there's an old saying, when you make a bad shot,
don't follow it with a stupid one....

I'm not being mean, just need to say it like it is...
don't think negative anytime out there...
go up to the tee box with confidence and swing away...
you can do it....

as for the asking for a ball from your friends,
that's when I toss them a range ball....lol

Personally, I think the 2nd ball in your pocket is good advice. Once you get in the habit of having one in your pocket, after awhile you don't even notice it, let alone think "Well, I can chunk this one in the lake since I have another one in my pocket". Just my personal opinion, but that's like saying "Well, I can go ahead and hit this ball OB, after all, I have another dozen balls in my bag 6 feet away". I think the 2nd ball in pocket is more of a minor pace of play help, a major pace of play help if it's cartpath only that day.

Luckily for me I don't lose that many balls, even tho I'm far from a good golfer. Just lucky in that my bad shots still tend to go straightish, but I do play with a guy from work on occassion who never carries a ball in his pocket, and tho not a major irritance, it is a wee bit irritating to watch him hit one OB then slowly scurry to the cart, rummage in his bag, and eventually hit his provisional a couple minutes later. Then again, it's probably more irritating to me since he does it at least 5 times a round. LOL

I always have another, same type, ball in my pocket, but it is mainly to putt with, since I don't have a caddie to toss it to, standing on the green. The ball washer is all the way to the next tee box. Now I guess the excrement will hit the air mover about playing the same ball to the hole.

Alittle saliva and a rub on the green goes a long way. Wink

Wet the end of your towel. That way you can clean clubs, ball, shoes. Whatever needs it.

I also do think it is very uncomfortable to have all those things in your pocket,(other than a marker) besides they should all be within reach in your cart or bag (if walking) when you go for the next shot. If you are driving and than decide to play another ball after crushing it OB the first time (a mulligan it's called if I'm not mistaken??)maybe it would be nice to have that ball in your pocket. Sad I should know all this because I have lost many a ball and have had numerous penalty shots. Thats why I buy cheap balls Laughing

May I mention, if your out with buddies, and most are, I think it isn't much of a bother anyway to toss them another ball to help them out and to make the round go a little smother and quicker. I don't know...just the kindness in me to do something like that I guess, besides my buddies were there for me...and I still do appreciate them being there still Smile

Most of the guys I golf with I have no problem tossing them a ball. There is the one guy I golf with after work tho, that I'll only toss a ball if I can grab one of my "throw-away" balls out of my bag. For some reason, he has the tendency to string several OB shots together in a row. It's much like watching a train wreck.

Shocked OH NO! never would I toss any of my balls especially if they are my good ones, but I would surely take from his stash. My "recently found" or "throw-away" stash are what come out of my bag Smile

I know what you mean mrtimb, I was recently out on a foursome and one of the guys was out for the first time in 10 years...even had the old wood drivers... and of course extra ball were needed. All in the fun though and again I was and still can were there shoes when it comes to causing the "train wreck" Cool

Before I walk onto the first tee I load up. In my right pocket I have 3 golf balls and a handful of tees. In my left pocket I have ballmark repair tool and ball marker (or it's on my hat). If I lose a ball, I will get another ball and put it in my pocket. I always like to carry 3. It allows me to have a second ball in case I lose one or need a provisional, plus it gives me another for those times when play slows or I've got no one behind me to hit another ball or practice chipping or whatever.

I carry in my pockets right pocket divot tool, small sliding brush to clean irons, left pocket, nothing, ball marker is on my hat, now in my cargo pocket left, extra ball(1) andshort tees right cargo pocket long tees for my driver. And the best thing I ever bought a ballzee ball cleaner. Wet the insides shake it a little, stick it in a pocket and you can clean the ball standing on the green or while walking around whilelining up a putt. It stays wet for the whole day.

Why is that so surprising? I don't have change in my pocket normally, let alone while playing golf...

I -hate hate hate- having things in my pocket. I always have. The moment I get to my office at work or get home after work, the very first thing I do is dump out my pockets.

As such, the most I ever have in my pockets on the course is a tee, and my iPod Touch for keeping score in my back pocket. Everything else stays in the bag.

I keep ONE ball, ONE brush tee, and a divot tool. Everything else is in the bag or in the cart. Ball marker is on my hat. Phone is on vibrate or silence and stays in the cart. Extra ball rides in the cupholder in the cart, next to my smokes and drink, under my GPS.
