I was having a lot of trouble with my shots ending up right of the line I thought I had set. I was trying to correct my swing for a push, slice, push/slice. Then a friend said I was simply lining up to the right. He said I was lifting and turning my head to check my line thus causing me to look left of where I was aligned. He suggested instead to roll my eyes left and just barely rotate my head enough to check my line. Sure enough I was right. A point on the left edge of my glasses, about a 1/4 inch below the temple attachment has become a built-in alignment aid. My GIR has begun to sslloowwllyy move up.

David Toms had an interesting technique on playing lessons from the pros. he said that get behind the ball and line up with a spot a few feet in front of the ball. Then from behind the ball take a step to the left(right handed golfer) and do the same thing for your feet. Thus your not using the same mark for your feet. You'll end up with a visual for your feet and for your ball. I'm trying to make this a habit.

I haven't tried the spot for the feet, but I take my practice swings behind the ball. Then pick a spot in front of the ball towards my target, set the club at that spot, then set my feet. Its really helped with the number of quality approach shots I've hit.

Is that legal what jerdman is doing?

I have thought about doing the same thing.

Pick a spot out in front of the ball.
Walk up to the ball, and put my clubhead down right on my spot.
Then square my feet off from the line that the ball and my clubhead are making.

I just didnt want to get called on it, on the golf course. I think it's a great way to line up.

You can't put something in front of the ball to aid with your alignment, unless you move it before your shot. I just use any kind of natural aid. Such as discoloration in the grass, divots, leaves, broken tees, anything thats on the right line.
Jack Nicklaus did it throughout his career.

Here ya go. Rule 8-2.

Jerdman, I do the same thing in using some natural discolaration of the grass, a divot, a leaf, etc., as my aiming point. I'm not a quality golfer by any stretch of the imagination, but it helps me.
